Scale-Up Denmark strenghtens innovation, and it’s a win-win situation

Semco maritime: Scale-up Denmark strenghens innovation, and it’s a win-win situation.

The big players in offshore industry should be open and proactively seek innovation with SMV’s and start-ups. It benefits the entire industry, says Verner Andersen, Vice President in Semco maritime, which among other things collaborate with Scale-Up Denmark’ Offshore-participants.

We gain access to new ideas and innovation – and the small companies, startups & entrepreneurs get access to a new market and production facilities, which they would not be able to obtain otherwise. It is win-win for both sides.

Vice Predident Verner Andersen, Semco maritime, does not doubt that a close collaboration between semi-huge companies, smaller start-ups or entrepreneurial companies is of huge benefit for both sides – and the industry collectively.

Semco maritime uses the collaboration with smaller companies in order to drive their own innovation. One gains more innovation through that proces.

” Many small start-ups, such as the participants in Scale Up Denmark offshore, have a strong innovative product or innovative idea, it’s everything to the – but they lack the set-up, in order to move their vision into the industry, and towards the customers”, says Verner Andersen

”We have that set-up, and we can appropriately see the case from the other side: That we to a certain degree are burdened by our huge apparatus, and have maybe lost some of the innovation power, which the small ones have. By collaborating, we benefit both ourselves and them”, argues Verner Andersen.

Semco Maritime is mentoring Real Safety in the Scale-Up Denmark offshore-regiment, and additionally like to use subcontractors for innovation. According to Verner Andersen, Semco maritime currently has a handful of suppliers, which contribute with innovation in some areas, in which Semco Maritime themselves are not able to:

”It can be in areas, where we have a need, but do not wish to enter ourselves to the extend it is required. As such, a trustful and good collaboration is often a better alternative for both sides”, says Verner Andersen.

He encourages that the offshore-industry’ big players should be open towards collaboration, and proactively seek innovation with SMV’s and start-ups.

”It benefits the entire industry, when we collaborate. An area, which the oil crises has contributed positively to, is that more have opened their eyes towards collaboration. It softens the conservative approach a bit, which has been imprinted in the offshore oil/gas. As an example, we seek collaboration in the offshoreenergy.dk-regiment or the rest of the network. It can both be with tasks we want to have solved, or through us seeking out partners, whom we believe can contribute with something for our business. It gives us innovation power and is very beneficial”, says Verner Andersen.
