The Region of Southern Denmark has just completed a new national mapping of the offshore-industry. The analysis is developed in collaboration with our partners within the industry, and is based on register data from Danmarks Statistik.

The results from the analysis has given us an interesting insight into the industry, as well as knowledge about the trends.

The main results show that:

  • Offshore wind is bigger than oil/gas. For the first time ever, offshore overtook oil/gas in 2015, in regards to estimated turnover. Here, Offshore wind stood with a turnover of a staggering 62 billion DKK, while oil/gas gained a turnover of 55 billion DKK.
  • There are more employees in offshore wind, and less employees in oil/gas. In 2015, the offshore industry employed 28.000 full-time employees in Denmark. While the oil/gas industry lost around 2.000 jobs in comparison to 2014, offshore wind rose just short of 1.000 jobs. That means that the amount of full-time jobs within the two industries now are practically identical.
  • There is optimism within the industry. An entire 52 pct. of the companies expect an increasing turnover within the period 2017-2020. Only 4 pct. of the companies expect a decreasing turnover within the same period.
  • There is great innovation in the offshore-industry. More than every 6th company working with both offshore wind and oil/gas, sought patent in 2014, while the same was the case for only every 25th company across all industries. As such, companies within both offshore wind and oil/gas were more than double as prone to invest in research and development.

The results of the analysis contains a number of interesting themes, which we find relevant in relation to Scale-Up Denmark. Here’s a few highlights:

The implications of a high innovation level. The analysis shows that the industries’ companies are very innovative compared with other industries. It is important knowledge in comparison to the potential scale-up companies, which are admitted into the Scale-up Denmark program. The innovation level must be high from the beginning, and must stay high, if the individual company wants to get success in the industry.

The implications of commercial understanding. The companies within the offshore-area might be innovative, but innovation alone does not create growth. It should also be combined with commercial understanding. The Scale-up Denmark program can help the individual company, by strengthening its competencies in the commercial area. When innovation and commercial understanding goes hand in hand, the growth opportunities increases.

Offshore is a position of strength in Southern Denmark, and an attractive business area. Scale-up Denmark builds on the regional positions of strength, and is confirmed by the analysis on the offshore-area. With the analysis’ numbers for the industry’s optimism and innovation, along with the fact, that there are also strong cluster- and industry organizations, which support the companies’ development, we have very high expectations for the Scale-up Denmark program and the implications it might have on the development of new big companies within the offshore industry.

With the knowledge the analysis has given us on the offshore-industry right here and now – and our expectations for Scale-up Denmark – we believe, that there is good reason for optimism. We look forward to follow the coming scale-up companies & their development.

Hovedresultaterne viser, at:

I 2015 beskæftigede offshorebranchen 28.000 fultidsansatte i Danmark.

Vi vil her fremhæve nogle få:
